Create QR codes that link to specific menu items.

Last updated: 8 February 2025

Product-Specific QR Codes

Product-specific QR codes allow you to link directly to individual menu items. This feature is currently available as a beta feature for select accounts. If you're interested in early access, contact us.

What Are Product-Specific QR Codes?

Instead of linking to your entire menu, product QR codes direct customers straight to:

  • A specific dish or product
  • Item details and allergen information
  • Dietary labels and ingredients
  • Product images (if enabled)

Use Cases

Retail Businesses

  • Shelf labeling: Place QR codes on product displays linking to item details
  • Packaging: Include QR codes on product packaging
  • Price displays: Link price signs to allergen information
  • In-store promotions: Highlight specific products with dedicated codes

Hospitality (Restaurants, Cafés, Bars)

  • Table displays: Place codes on table tents highlighting signature dishes
  • Menu boards: Link specials to detailed allergen information
  • Staff training: QR codes for internal product knowledge
  • Cross-selling: Promote related items or upsell opportunities
  • Catering menus: Send clients product-specific links for events

Generating Product QR Codes

From the Menu Item

  1. Navigate to a specific menu item
  2. Look for the QR Code section or icon
  3. Click "Generate Product QR Code" or similar option
  4. The QR code will display on screen

Customisation Options

You can typically:

  • Download the code as PNG image
  • Print directly from your browser
  • Resize the image for different applications

Using Product QR Codes

Printing and Displaying

  • Shelf labels: Print at 2cm × 2cm minimum
  • Table tents: 3cm × 3cm or larger
  • Packaging: 1.5cm × 1.5cm works for small products
  • Laminate or protect: Extends lifespan in wet environments

Best Practices

  • Test before printing: Always scan to verify correct item
  • Size appropriately: At least 2cm × 2cm for easy scanning
  • Good lighting: Ensure QR codes are well-lit
  • Placement: Position where customers naturally look
  • Refresh rate: Check for updated allergen info before reprinting

What Happens When Scanned

When a customer scans a product-specific QR code:

  1. Browser opens with the product page
  2. Item details display including:
  • Item name and description
  • Allergen information (all 14 major allergens)
  • Dietary labels
  • "May Contain" warnings
  • Product image (if enabled)
  1. Mobile-friendly layout optimised for phones
  2. Easy filtering to find allergen-free alternatives

Managing Product QR Codes

Updating Items

If you edit an item:

  • QR code automatically updates with new information
  • No need to reprint (unless item details changed significantly)
  • Existing printed codes continue to work

Deactivating Codes

If you delete or archive an item:

  • The product QR code will show a "not found" message
  • Generate new codes for replacement items
  • Remove old printed codes from displays

Tips for Managing Multiple QR Codes

For businesses with many products:

  • File organisation: Label downloaded files with item numbers/names
  • Tracking spreadsheet: Keep records of which codes are printed/displayed

Difference: Location vs Product QR Codes

Troubleshooting

QR Code Won't Generate

  • Verify the menu item is saved and active
  • Check the item has a name
  • Try refreshing the page

Scanned Code Shows Wrong Item

  • Verify you're scanning the correct code
  • Check the item hasn't been moved or renamed
  • Clear browser cache and try again

Code Not Scanning

  • Ensure code is printed at minimum 2cm × 2cm
  • Test with multiple phones/QR scanner apps
  • Check lighting and image clarity
  • Avoid glare or reflections
